WOOD CIRCULAR 2050: Lviv to Host a Hackathon for Future Furniture Makers, Designers, and Innovators
What will the furniture industry look like in 2050? Which professions will be in demand in an era shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and the circular economy? Can production leftovers become the foundation for entirely new products?
These are the questions that participants of the WOOD CIRCULAR 2050 hackathon will explore on June 12 at Arena Lviv. The event will bring together school and university students interested in design, technology, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and modern manufacturing.
The hackathon aims to demonstrate that today’s furniture and woodworking industries are about much more than production. They are increasingly driven by innovation, creativity, digital technologies, and the search for sustainable solutions.
A New Perspective on the Furniture Industry
The furniture sector is undergoing rapid transformation under the influence of global trends. Manufacturers are increasingly adopting circular economy principles, digital tools, automated production processes, and artificial intelligence technologies.
As a result, technical skills alone are no longer enough. The ability to collaborate, generate ideas, solve problems, and create value-added products is becoming equally important.
WOOD CIRCULAR 2050 has been designed as a practical learning environment where young people can experience these changes firsthand and test their abilities in addressing real-world challenges of the future.

A key part of the event will be the team challenge “The Second Life of Materials.”
Participants will receive sets of materials typically considered production leftovers in the woodworking and furniture industries. Their task will be to rethink the purpose of these materials and develop concepts for new products.
These products may include interior design items, organizers, decorative elements, lighting solutions, furniture for public spaces, or any other practical solution aligned with sustainable resource use.
This approach helps participants understand that waste can become a valuable resource and that environmental thinking can generate both innovation and business opportunities.
Artificial Intelligence as a Creative Tool
Another important component of the program will focus on the use of artificial intelligence tools.
After developing their concepts, participants will create visual representations of their ideas using AI-powered solutions. This will demonstrate how digital technologies can help designers, engineers, and manufacturers transform ideas into visual concepts more efficiently.
Through practical exercises and real-life challenges, participants will gain a better understanding of how artificial intelligence can support future careers in manufacturing and product development.
What Will the Furniture Profession Look Like in 2050?
Participants will also be challenged to design a concept for a future profession within the furniture or woodworking sector.
Teams will analyze current industry trends and propose their vision of what specialists may be needed twenty-five years from now, which competencies they should possess, and how technology could influence their work.
This exercise encourages young people not only to imagine the future but also to reflect on their own career paths and opportunities within the manufacturing sector.

The hackathon format is designed to ensure active participation rather than passive observation. Every stage of the program involves teamwork, discussion, problem-solving, and presentation of results.

The WOOD CIRCULAR 2050 hackathon will take place on June 12, 2026, at Arena Lviv as part of the Woodworking Exhibition and the SKYLA project, implemented by the Regional Development Agency of Lviv Region.
